It’s rare for YouTube to have a complete outage, but it has happened before. The first thing to check before anything else is whether the problem is with YouTube itself, rather than anything on your side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two sites to help you do that are\u00a0Downdetector\u00a0and\u00a0Outage.Report. They crowdsource user reports to show you what issues are being reported and from where in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When YouTube has major downtime, news outlets will also report on it. The quickest way to check is by going to\u00a0Google News\u00a0and searching for “YouTube down” or “YouTube outage”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re using YouTube via a desktop browser, follow these steps to try to fix YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You should always be using the most up-to-date version of your browser. Most popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox should automatically update, but it’s always best to double-check this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Chrome, paste chrome:\/\/settings\/help<\/strong> into the URL bar and press Enter<\/strong>. You should see “Google Chrome is up to date”. If you don’t, the latest build will automatically download. Once it’s finished, click Relaunch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For other browsers, see our guide on\u00a0how to update your web browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Try clearing your cookies and cache to clean out the browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Chrome, paste chrome:\/\/settings\/clearBrowserData<\/strong> into the URL bar and press Enter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the Time range<\/strong> dropdown, select All time<\/strong>. Check Cookies and other site data<\/strong> and Cached images and files<\/strong>. Click Clear data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For other browsers, read our guide on\u00a0how to delete internet cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Browser extensions can cause compatibility problems with YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To view your extensions in Chrome, paste chrome:\/\/extensions\/<\/strong> in the URL bar and press Enter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Disable each extension in turn by clicking the slider so it turns gray. After each, try YouTube again and see if the problem is fixed. Try updating them to see it resolves the issue. First, grab the latest drivers from your manufacturer’s website (e.g., AMD, NVIDIA, Intel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, press Windows key + X<\/strong> and click Device Manager<\/strong>. Double click Display adapters<\/strong>. Then right-click<\/strong> your graphics card and click Update driver<\/strong>. It might not be stable enough to stream YouTube. Use Windows’ native troubleshooter to detect and resolve problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Press Windows key + I<\/strong> to open Settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n If this doesn’t work, see our article on\u00a0diagnosing a network problem\u00a0for more advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you’re using YouTube on an Android or iOS device, like an iPhone or iPad, try these troubleshooting steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Your operating system may be outdated and thus YouTube is unable to run correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 Images<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Android, open Settings<\/strong> and look for Software update<\/strong> (or System update<\/strong>.) It might be within an About phone<\/strong> section. If you see YouTube on this list, tap Update<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you have been using the YouTube app for a while, a large amount of cache and data could have built up and be causing issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 Images<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Android, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage<\/strong>. Tap Clear cache<\/strong> and see if it fixes the problem. If not, return here and tap Clear data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On iOS, the best way to do this is to uninstall and reinstall YouTube. Press and hold<\/strong> the app on your home screen and tap Delete<\/strong>. Then head to the App Store and download YouTube again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The YouTube app can have problems if your device’s date and time is out of alignment with that of the YouTube server. The best way to resolve this is to allow your network to automatically handle the date and time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 Images<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Android, go to Settings > General Management > Date and time<\/strong> and slide Automatic date and time<\/strong> to On<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On iOS, go to Settings > General > Date & Time<\/strong> and slide Set Automatically<\/strong> to On<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n YouTube might not be working if your internet is struggling to connect properly. On Android, go to Settings > Connections<\/strong>. On iOS, go to Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First, turn Flight mode<\/strong> on and off. This can often refresh your network settings and solve the problem. Next, try connecting via Wi-Fi or your phone network (whichever one you aren’t using by default). If this doesn’t work, try disabling Bluetooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 Images<\/p>\n\n\n\n Still no luck? You can reset your network connection entirely.
